The Commerce in the Middle colonies was based on the fertile soil, while also on sawmills and gristmills and also the textile industry. Abundant forest attracted lumbering and shipbuilding companies to the middle colonies. The colony of Pennsylvania grew important in the production of Pig Iron, which is iron with a high carbon content. Because of this Pennsylvania also became known for Pig Iron products such as; The Pennsylvania long rifle and the Conestoga wagon. The other half of commerce came from the Grains exporting Wheat, Corn, Rye, and flax. Most of this came from the colony of Pennsylvania making it the largest food provider in the colonies from 1725 to 1840. All of this was due to the Fertile soil and the many calm and wide rivers that attracted business.
The forest were also good for hunting fur. The economy was also a free enterprise meaning that the people could make what they thought was going to make them money and sell it.
